![]() Bar Harbor gets its name from the sand bar that connects the main land to Bar Island at low tide. Driving on the sandbar to Bar Island in Bar Harbor is a right of passage for many. Kayaks regularly launch their tours from the sandbar with vans and buses loaded with kayakers and guests disembarking while the tide is down. What the professionals know is the 11 foot Maine tide turns this "sandbar/road/beach" back into the Atlantic Ocean every 6 hours. Look what happens when a local tourist thinks he has scored an awesome FREE parking spot and parks his car seemingly high and dry on the sandbar only to return from shopping hours later to soggy mess and a completely ruined (aka "totaled") car. That was an expensive parking spot after all! All images © by Greg Burke - VisitMaine.net
