Owls
Head Port Clyde, Thomaston

Another charmingly beautiful section of the Maine Coast. South Thomaston is
a small Maine town on the Weskeag River that leads out to Spruce Head and St
George, then further onto Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde. From South
Thomaston, you are in easy reach of great beaches like Birch Point Beach and
Crescent Beach, plus the Owls Head Light and Owls Head Transportation
Museum.
The region is called Owls Head not for its population of nocturnal birds,
but for an owl’s face that appears in the rocky cliffs near Owls Head
lighthouse, which can only be seen from the water. Car collectors and plane
buffs will enjoy Owls
Head Transportation Museum’s extensive collection of
antique cars, motorcycles, and historic aircraft like the Red Baron’s Triplane and Wright Brothers’ biplanes.
Birch Point Beach State Park is a beautiful stretch of sand located in Owls
Head, on Hogan Road, on your way to Rockland. This beautiful Maine State
Park offers a generous sandy beach and picnic area,
with facilities although
there are no lifeguards.
Birch Point Beach is less busy than other Maine
beaches, making it a real gem.
Crescent Beach is another beautiful beach near Rockland and Owls Head,
though lined with beach cottages and not as private and preserved as Birch
Point State Park, it offers soft white sand and gentle surf with limited
public parking. Don’t let Southern Maine claim to have all the best beaches,
the midcoast of Maine (referred to as the Lighthouse Coast) has many great
beaches.
