Neptune Visiting Kennebunk Beach in the winter

Maine in Winter

Nothing is quite as beautiful as the Ocean in the winter…the snow covered coast… quiet and peaceful. A scenic seaside village draped in a blanket of snow. Picture yourself cozy by a warm fire in a beautiful Maine inn. Or enjoying a bottle of wine in a spectacular restaurant overlooking the ocean waves.

Skiing is one of Maine's best winter activities, on some of the biggest mountains in New England. In fact, Maine is home to two of the largest ski resorts in the East - Sunday River and Sugarloaf. Nordic skiers will find they can cross country or snowshoe in so many places in Maine, trails, farms, fields, and ski resorts. Snowmobiling is a rush when you are cruising across a snow covered field, or across frozen lakes, or navigating the extensive Maine snowmobile trail network and mountain terrain. Great events abound in Maine's winter season too, ice fishing derbies and winter carnivals, ski resort festivals from Thanksgiving openings to Easter at Sugarloaf.

Maine also hosts nationally recognized holiday celebrations in seaside villages complete with carriage rides, Christmas craft fairs, fireworks and more. Learn more in our Holiday Events page. A Maine getaway is great any time of year but fabulous for the holidays and the winter season.
