Maine Summer Theater
For visitors looking to add some culture and entertainment to their vacation, Maine has a variety of renowned summer theaters that produce Broadway caliber plays every season for your enjoyment. From old-fashioned playhouses to Shakespeare on the green and State theaters, there is something for every theatre-lover in the artistic state of Maine!

Maine playhouses are a unique place to take in top-notch performances. As home to some of the oldest and most well known playhouses, Maine is fortunate to draw Broadway stars and actors to perform each summer. Ogunquit Playhouse, which started its life as a renovated garage in town square in 1933, has become known today as Americas Foremost Summer Theatre, attracting actresses like Andrea McArdle, Carson Kressley, and Sally Struthers. Visitors to the Arundel Barn Playhouse will marvel at the beautiful New England style barn that has been converted into a premier summer stage. Further inland in Berwick, Hackmatack Playhouse has become known as one of the most charming and quaint summer theaters in Maine, located in a historic farmhouse.

Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick offers a more traditional Broadway-style venue located on the picturesque Bowdoin College campus. For Shakespeare lovers, newly opened in Summer 2011, Maine Stage Shakespeare is comprised of New York-based artists looking to establish a resident Shakespeare company in Southern Maine in an outdoor park downtown Kennebunk. Performances are held at Lafayette Park in Kennebunk, weather permitting. Portland Stage produces a variety of mainstage, studio, and childrens theater year-round. For visitors further up North, check out the Lakewood Theater, located on the western shores of beautiful Wesserunsett Lake. After more than 100 seasons, Lakewood has become one of Americas oldest and most famous summer theaters, offering performances of all genres from comedies and dramas to musicals and childrens shows.

Whatever your theater preference, you will surely be entertained by all that Maine Summer Theater has to offer.
