Any skier worth their edges knows Sugarloaf for its legendary skiing, New England’s biggest ski resort, the East’s only snowfields, and a long ski and snowboard season from November to May. The views of the Bigelow Mountain range are phenomenal, so are the brilliant white birch trees throughout the Carrabassett Valley.

Sugarloaf Ski Resort and Area Lodging

Sugarloaf Resort is lovely in summer for golfing, hiking and mountain biking. Sugarloaf Resort has many lodging options from the on mountain Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel, to ski in ski out condos, and private mountain homes for rent. Downtown Kingfield 16 miles away from The Loaf is a classic old Maine town, with restuarants, bars, a few shops, hotels and inns in town, along Route 27 – the Mountain Access Road. 

Maine Skiing

Stratton and Eustis are other skiers’ and snowmobilers’ towns, 10 miles in the other direction from Sugarloaf, humble but affordable for house rentals, motels and cabins. Summer here is all about water sports and fishing on beautiful Flagstaff Lake.

The Carrabassett Valley and Kingfield

The Carrabassett Valley and the town of Kingfield are best recognized as off mountain places to stay when skiing or snowboarding at the Loaf, or golfing Sugarloaf’s Golf Course. The Carrabassett Valley Academy, located at the base of the Sugarloaf access road earns the region world-wide recognition as training top Olympic skiers and snowboarders like Seth Wescott and Bode Miller.

Kingfield, 30 minutes from Sugarloaf, has a charming downtown district with restaurants and shops, hotelsinns, and bed and breakfasts, and some nice restaurants, bars, and shops.

Nearby Eustis and Stratton also offer quiet settings for an affordable ski weekend, or a relaxing summer or fall getaway in the mountains of Maine. The areas pristine rivers and streams are ideal for kayaking, canoeing or fishing. Small inns, wilderness camps, and bed and breakfasts in the Sugarloaf region offer good old Maine hospitality and a restful place to stay while you are exploring the majestic Bigelow Preserve (part of a 36,000 acre reserve for the public), Maine’s Flagstaff Lake, and the Kennebec and Dead River.

Fall foliage in the Sugarloaf area is particularly spectacular, when you can enjoy a leisure paddle, hike, bike ride, or a Moose safari to see Maine’s state animal in the wild. The Appalachian Trail, the Maine Huts and Trails network, and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail all pass through this Franklin County region.
