Guide to Hancock, Sullivan, Prospect Harbor, and Winter Harbor Maine Hotels, Inns, and Lodging

Hancock, Sullivan, Winter Harbor and Prospect Harbor areas are all near Mount Desert Island. Hancock County sports a couple of Inns and B&B’s. Sullivan and Sullivan Harbor are located just across Frenchman Bay from Bar Harbor. While millions flock to Mount Desert Island to see Acadia and Bar Harbor, few visit the incredibly scenic Schoodic Peninsula which is also part of Acadia National Park. This is the only mainland region of Acadia National ParkSchoodic Peninsula offers a spectacular scenic drive around the peninsula via car or bike with many great places to stop for a picnic or a walk on the magnificent pink granite boulders and beaches. The sunsets and sunrises from here across Frenchman’s Bay and Cadillac Mountain are stunning.

Lodging here has the benefit of waterfront bed and breakfast homes, and cozy cabins situated right by the ocean’s edge. Lobstering is plentiful in these waters, and therefor affordable at local lobster pounds and classic Maine clam shacks. Boaters and artists love visiting these towns and less discovered harbors as these are true Maine gems. This Downeast region also provides some fabulous oceanfront camping opportunities with Mount Desert Island as a stunning backdrop. Other affordable relaxed Maine towns in this region are Winter Harbor, Gouldsboro, Sorrento and Trenton, and further Downeast areMachias, Jonesport, and Lubec.

  1. To who this may concern:
I was born in Maine and spent the summers in Castine, my mother’s hometown. Those years were between 1939 and 1957 then we sold my Grandparent’s house. To this day I still wish there had been away of keeping it.
There is something I don’t understand when mentioning The Maine Maritime Academy–established in 1971?? I can remember it was functioning when I was a young child. Could this be a misprint?
I did enjoy reading about the Coastal (Rte. 1) trip. So familiar, been on that journey from Saco many times thru my ‘teens’ and now in my 85th year it certainly brought back many memories!! I’ve lived my married life, over 60 years, in several other states. Enjoyed the the ‘recap’ of my early summers.
