Ogunquit Playhouse, which started its life as a renovated garage in town square in 1933, is known today as America’s Foremost Summer Theatre, attracting actresses like Andrea McArdle, Carson Kressley, and Sally Struthers. Visitors to the Arundel Barn Playhouse will marvel at the beautiful New England style barn that has been converted into a premier summer stage near Kennebunkport.
Further inland in Berwick, Hackmatack Playhouse has become known as one of the most charming and quaint summer theaters in Maine, located in a historic farmhouse.
State Music Theatre in Brunswick offers a more traditional Broadway-style venue located on the picturesque Bowdoin College campus. For Shakespeare lovers, Maine Stage Shakespeare is comprised of New York-based artists looking to establish a resident Shakespeare company in Southern Maine where they perform at Rivergreen Park in Kennebunkport, at the Colony Hotel, and at an outdoor park downtown Kennebunk.
Portland Stage produces a variety of mainstage, studio, and children’s theater year-round. In Boothbay Harbor, the Boothbay Opera House offers plays and live concerts throughout th summer season, just a short walk from the waterfront and Boothbay’s bed and breakfasts and inns.
For visitors further up North, check out the Lakewood Theater, located on the western shores of beautiful Wesserunsett Lake. Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel Maine is not a Summer Theater but it is a music venue in an historic barn, bringing top local and national talent to an intimate Maine concert setting during the summer season.
