Fall Foliage Events in Maine

Wedding Cake HousePeople visit Maine from all over the globe to see fall foliage. September and October’s changing leaves are a burst of beautiful color- absolutely magical whether viewed against the brilliant blue waters of Maine’s coastline and lakes, or the rolling hills and mountains. Each fall the colors begin to take on their autumnal hues as early as late August, but the best leaf peeping is typically early October, and peak at Columbus Day Weekend. What’s most special about Maine’s foliage is the contrasting colors from brilliant maples that turn bright red, to oak and elm that turn a burnt orange, and birches that become bright yellow and golden. Maine is the Pine Tree state, so all this deciduous foliage of leaves is offset by the grand green evergreen pines. If you visit Maine, vacationland, in the fall be sure to bring your camera, iPad or iPhone to take lots of photos of the fantastic foliage.

Maine is loaded with Haunted Inns and Lighthouses and late October is the perfect time to stay in one!

The bonus of a fall vacation in Maine is some of the best weather of the year. Days are often sunny and warm, you can walk the beach or enjoy a kayak or hike in comfortable temperatures. Evenings, the autumn sunsets and return of cool crisp air makes for a nice stroll and great sleeping under a down duvet at some romantic Maine inn.

Also fall tends to be less busy than prime summer time in Maine. Gone are the vacation families, and there are fewer tourists lined up for Maine’s most popular waterfront restaurants and clam shacks. Maine inns, house rentals, and resorts lower their rates after August and July, so you will find lodging deals mid-week September and great rates after Columbus Weekend through November in Maine.

Fall brings plenty of festivals, fairs and craft shows to Maine as well. From the Fryeburg Fair, to Harvest Fest in York, OgunquitFest, and craft fairs and farmers markets all around the state, you can find fresh local raised produce, pumpkins, apples, and handmade art, wood crafts and jewelry at outdoor markets and craft fairs most weekends.

Some of the wackiest festivals in Maine include Sugarloaf’s Homecoming Weekend and the North American Wife Carrying Championships at Sunday River on Columbus Weekend. If you have never seen strapping strong men carry their wives over the shoulders, dragging their dames through mud pits, over tree stumps, rocks and ridiculous obstacles, then you must witness this wife carrying carnival - and see the winner carry off his wife’s weight in beer as his prize. Both Maine ski resorts, Sugarloaf and Sunday River hold annual festivals Columbus Weekend with chairlifts rides, live bands, food tents, season pass sales, beer tents and craft fairs in anticipation of the fast approaching ski season. Cellardoor Winery holds an annual VinFest Harvest Party in early October with top live bands, gourmet food stations and wine tasting under a big tent in their Lincolnville vineyard.

Portland’s Harvest on the Harbor is a great fall festival for foodies and wine lovers alike, held on Portland’s waterfront with mouthwatering samples from Maine and Portland’s top chefs.

There is still plenty of things to do in fall in Maine, biking, hiking, boating – just bring a jacket, shopping, exploring the coast, or simply enjoying a cozy Maine BnB or inn with a view out to sea.

But the main reason to visit Maine in fall is for those leaves. It's worth leaving home to see fall at its peak with the spectacular show of brilliant colors… goes well with a fresh baked red Maine lobster and a steamy cup of chowder. See you this fall in Maine… More about Maines Fall Foliage
