Fall in Maine means back to school, apple picking and finding that perfect pumpkin in a Maine pumpkin patch. The smell of the fall foliage and crisp morning air is permeating with the autumn season atmosphere beguiling travelers coming to Southern Maine for vacation. 
If I were an elementary school student writing a project about Maine, I might write about Maine’s Octoberfest season. I’d likely include how mom and dad like their Maine brewed Shipyard Pumpkinhead beer during the fall foliage or most likely, I would talk about my favorite thing to do in the fall: pumpkin picking.

Now, you may be surprised that even as an adult, I personally love everything about pumpkin picking in Maine. But if you have kids–great. Pumpkin picking is definitely a fun thing to do with kids in Maine. That means carefully walking through the pumpkin field somewhere at a Pumpkin Patch in search for one big pumpkin to give me two things: lots of pumpkin seeds and a good canvas for pumpkin carving to create a Jack o Lantern. Don’t you just love the tradtion of carving a pumpkin and roasting those pumpkin seeds.
Pumpkin Seed Recipe:
1. Carve out the top of the pumkin around the stem. Cut at an angle towards the stem to keep the top from fall inside.
2. Scrape out the pulp in your pumpkin with your hand, spoon, or even a knife to get the strings unattached.
3. Separate the seeds from the guts as best as you can. Doesn’t need to be perfect.
4. Douse the seeds in olive oil and a little bit of salt. Bake for 10 minutes or until brown.
If you’re staying at a vacation rental home, make sure you really clean up after yourself. This gets messy!
