Pemaquid Point in Maine’s Damariscotta region is a scenic natural land conservation. Pemaquid Point is the next peninsula after Boothbay Harbor. The towns of Pemaquid, New Harbor, Bristol and Round Pond are off the usual path of most Maine tourists heading for Camden or Bar Harbor.

Pemaquid is home to one of Maine’s most iconic lighthouses. In fact, it’s featured on the Maine quarter, the first U.S. coin to feature a lighthouse. It was built in 1835 and marks the entrance to Muscongus Bay and Johns Bay. The light and lighthouse keeper’s home and museum are preserved in a spectacular coastal park, perfect for picnics with views out to Monhegan Island.

Pemaquid peninsula is comprised of Bristol and New Harbor with several inns and bed and breakfasts, and cottages offering overnight lodging, weekly rentals. While visiting Pemaquid you should visit Colonial Pemaquid’s Fort William Henry which dates back to 1692, also known as Fort Frederick. The Fort House built in 1792 and the castle like bunker of Fort William Henry, a replica, is impressive, and rumored to be haunted like many Maine landmarks. This Pemaquid Fort offers a great view of theharbor and sea beyond, and nearby is a perfect place tolaunch kayaks.

Pemaquid Beach Park offers sunbathers a quarter mile of sand in what is known as a pocket beach, a protected cove of sand deposited by glacier. Pemaquid Beach is consistently ranked one of the cleanest beaches by Maine Healthy Beaches Program. A popular waterfront restaurant specializing in fresh seafood is located nearby in the Pemaquid Harbor by the fishing docks and Pemaquid River boat ramp.

Damariscotta

Like many Maine towns, Damariscotta has a Native American name – this one means “river of little fish”. Damariscotta is a lovely coastal town off of Rt 1 located at the head of Pemaquid Peninsula. Oysters harvested from the Damariscotta River are a popular delicacy for visitors vacationing in Damariscotta. The river also serves up great water touring opportunities including kayaking and boating. Damariscotta, as well as the Pemaquid Peninsula region, hosts many exciting festivals throughout the year including Pumpkinfest, Pemaquid Oyster Festival and Alewives Festival.

New Harbor

In the working fishing village of New Harbor, you can enjoy delicious seafood fresh off the boat at Shaws Fish and Lobster Wharf or board a Hardy Boat ferry to Monhegan Island. Or board a lobster boat tour for a sightseeing boat ride to see Maine’s puffins, seals and even whales on the outlying maine islands and coastline.

As you head north east off Pemaquid Neck, you pass Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve, where the noted marine biologist and environmentalist researched her book “The Edge of the Sea.” Then you will come to the quaint town of Round Pond, a protected pond shaped harbor along Muscongus Sound. Round Pond offers visitors an inn, a restaurant, The Granite Hall General Store, and an art gallery in a beautifully peaceful waterfront setting.

If you have an extra day, a visit to stunning and remote Monhegan Island is a great adventure for hiking and exploring this Maine island that hasn’t changed with the times, in a good way.
