You want to go on a Maine vacation, but putting Fido in a kennel is a hassle and finding someone to feed the cat can be a pain! Good news—Maine is among the most pet friendly state, even along the bustling coastal towns. Lots of Maine resorts and lodging properties now accommodate dogs and cats.
Most pet friendly lodging properties are hotels and motels, however plenty of cottages and inns accept dogs and cats. Keep in mind that most bed and breakfasts are not pet friendly, but they are out there. Also, note that not all campgrounds are dog friendly. Just because you have easy access to the outdoors doesn’t mean that pets are accepted at every campground, although many do welcome dogs.
Below are Maine lodging properties that are happy to accommodate you and your pets! After all, what kind of family vacation is it without the whole family? Be sure to read the fine print before you make your paw prints as some pet restrictions may apply (some inns may accept one pet or only small dogs, etc.).

What better way to spend your vacation in Maine than with man’s best friend? While we boast the Vacationland title, we also like to think it’s a Vacationland that’s gone to the dogs. Any dog would love to run along the beach surf or tag along for a hiking trip on Cadillac Mountain. Pets are a welcome addition to many Maine towns, and many store fronts and shop owners will even leave water or food bowls outside their door for those long, dog days of summer day.
Many Maine hotels are pet-friendly, and innkeepers are happy to provide pet owners with maps and names of local pet-friendly businesses, beaches and walking areas. Some hotels have pet friendly packages that include special treats, even a dog bed for your pet staying in your room. The dog days of summer in Maine are even better when you can bring man’s best friend to these pet friendly lodgign properties throughout the state.
There are several dog-friendly shops and restaurants, and dog parks in Maine, where your pet can run and play in the fresh Maine air. Area beaches usually allow dogs year-round, except in peak summer months when there may be certain time restrictions on when they are allowed on the sand. Kennebunk Beach allows dogs before 9am for example in the summer.
Though we list pet friendly lodges in Maine, please take care to read the specific acknowledgements and requirements for the hotel you choose. Most hotels and inns do require that dogs be leashed within the premises of the property. Pet owners are responsible for picking up after their pet on outdoor property and cleaning up accidents that occur indoors as well as reporting any damage that is caused by the pet. Be aware, you may be asked to leave the hotel property if your dog or pet is disruptive without any refund.
You should anticipate an extra charge for your dog staying in your room, this pet fee is usually $10-25 and is intended to offset the hotel’s extra cleaning expense for the room, carpet cleaning, etc. Be sure to ask the innkeeper or front desk at the pet friendly hotel what their policies are before check in. Of course another option is to be board your pet at a nearby Maine kennel, but that is not the same as having your dog with you.
To some, it’s not really a family vacation if the family dog was left behind in a kennel. That’s why Pet Friendly hotels exist: to let you enjoy the family vacation in Maine with the whole family.
