Spring: Mud Season and Rushing Waterfalls

March to May

Spring in the Rangeley region can be unpredictable. As the snow melts, rivers and waterfalls surge to life, making it a great time to see Smalls Falls and Coos Canyon at their most powerful.

Tip: Wildlife is on the move, and moose sightings along Route 17 are common.

That said, mud season can make some side roads and hiking trails difficult to navigate. Many dirt roads are soft and rutted, and some trailheads may be wet or still holding snow in shaded areas.

Most seasonal businesses in Rangeley open by late May, but earlier in the season, some restaurants and shops may have limited hours.

  • Best for: Waterfalls, moose-watching, and quiet roads before summer crowds arrive.
  • Watch for: Muddy roads, wet trails, and limited access to some sites.

Summer: Long Days and Outdoor Adventure

June to August

Summer is prime time for exploring the lakes, waterfalls, and trails along this scenic drive. The forests are full and green, the lakes are warm enough for swimming, and the days are long enough to pack in plenty of adventure.

This is the best season for kayaking on Mooselookmeguntic Lake, hiking to Cascade Stream Gorge, and camping in Rangeley Lake State Park. Fishing is also at its peak, with landlocked salmon and brook trout abundant in the region’s waters.

The downside? Summer brings more visitors, especially in July and August. Expect a little more traffic, and book lodging in advance if you plan to stay overnight.

Tip: Black flies and mosquitoes can be relentless in early summer, so bring insect repellent if you’re spending time outside.

  • Best for: Boating, hiking, camping, and classic summer road trip vibes.
  • Watch for: Crowds on weekends, biting insects, and higher lodging rates.

Fall: Peak Foliage and Crisp Mountain Air

September to Mid-October

If you want to see Maine’s fall colors at their most vibrant, this is the time to go. The Height of Land overlook is legendary in autumn, offering a sweeping view of Mooselookmeguntic Lake surrounded by fiery reds, oranges, and golds.

Early October is peak foliage season, and it draws visitors from all over. Expect more traffic, especially on weekends, and higher demand for lodging. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, mid-to-late September offers brilliant early-season color without the biggest crowds.

Moose activity increases as they move through their rutting season, making fall another great time for wildlife sightings. The air is crisp but comfortable, perfect for hiking and scenic drives.

  • Best for: Incredible foliage, scenic overlooks, and cool, comfortable hiking weather.
  • Watch for: Heavy traffic on peak weekends and chilly mornings and evenings.

Winter: A Snowy Wonderland

November to March

Winter transforms the Rangeley Lakes region into a quiet, snow-covered paradise. The lakes freeze, the forests turn white, and the scenic byway becomes a gateway to winter sports and stunning cold-weather scenery.

Height of Land is breathtaking in winter, with frozen lakes stretching toward snow-covered peaks. The drive itself is usually well-plowed and passable, but conditions can change quickly. Snow tires or four-wheel drive are recommended.

This is also one of the best snowmobiling destinations in Maine, with well-groomed trails throughout the region. Cross-country skiing and ice fishing are popular on Rangeley Lake, and nearby Saddleback Mountain offers excellent downhill skiing.

  • Best for: Winter scenery, snowmobiling, skiing, and a peaceful off-season experience.
  • Watch for: Icy roads, limited accessibility to some trailheads, and extremely cold temperatures.
