Lewiston and Auburn are considered one metropolitan entity in Maine, sister cities known to locals as LA. Home to Ivy league Bates College and University of Southern Maine, Lewiston offers diversity and cultural amenities of Bates Theater and Art Museum plus a lively music atmosphere and creative community. Seated on the Androscoggin River, Lewiston-Auburn is a pretty site for a picnic, boat launches, trophy fishing, kayaking and canoeing. Summer brings outdoor concerts and festivals, parades and farmers markets.
Here visitors will also find entertainment watching the Portland Pirates and Championship Boxing at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee Arena. In fall, the annual Dempsey Challenge Road Race takes place where Maine born Patrick Dempsey, Dr McDreamy, returns every Columbus Weekend for this fun fundraiser bike race across beautiful Maine towns – a charity for the local hospital. In winter, there is nearby snowmobiling, ice skating, snowshoeing and even a family friendly ski hill – Lost Valley.
As the second largest city in Maine, Lewiston’s downtown area boasts an array of entertainment from Orchestra concerts, varying ethnic restaurants and boutique shops to Maine bars. Lewiston is also the base to the annual Great Falls Balloon Festival attracting visitors from across the US and Canada. As the saying goes in Lewiston, “It’s Happening Here”. Visitors of the Lewiston-Auburn region can find affordable lodging and familiar brand name hotels, and are an easy drive to some of Maine’s best outdoor attractions.
