The Authentic Boothbay Harbor Inns and Bed and Breakfasts
Like many of Maine’s coastal towns, Boothbay Harbor is very authentic, a non-commercial, unspoiled seaside town. You won’t find big chain stores, just cute boutiques, seafood cafes and a waterfront full of charter boats and lighthouse tours. The closest Walmart is in Brunswick, the closest McDonalds in Bath. Boothbay is a classic Maine coastal community where the people are friendly, independent and proud.
Most of Boothbay Harbor’s lodging establishments are privately owned bnbs operated by local residents. Boothbay Harbor’s lodging accommodations range from a few seaside resorts and cottages, to motels, and quaint bed and breakfasts and inns. In a quiet slow paced town, more affordable than Kennebunkport or Bar Harbor, a Boothbay Harbor bnb or inn is the way to go to really capture the vibe of the coastal village. You’ll feel worlds away from home, yet strangely, feel very much at home staying at a charming bed and breakfast in Boothbay Harbor.

With its perch at the end of the harbor overlooking Linekin Bay and Boothbay, visitors can find several bed and breakfasts or inns in Boothbay Harbor along the oceanfront, like the Rocktide Inn, Harbour Towne, Ocean Point Inn and Tugboat Inn. Hearing the lapping of waves against the shoreline, tinkling sailboats masts, and the swaying of the moored boats within the harbor is dreamy. Seeing the sunrise over the sea is a calm you can’t get from the sounds and sights of the city realm.
Staying at a Boothbay Harbor inn or bed and breakfast will offer the repose you need for your Maine vacation getaway. Having the amenities of both elegant and cozy lodgings, sumptuous bed and breakfasts and inns are the perfect place for a romantic stay. Picture cocktails overlooking the harbor to end your day exploring the Boothbay region, and a beautifully hand cooked breakfast each morning prepared by your innkeeper. Meeting your innkeeper and fellow guests often provides insight as to the best attractions in Boothbay, which boat excursion to take to see Boothbay’s lighthouses, or what special events are going on at Maine State Aquarium or the Opera House Boothbay at Boothbay Harbor.
While there are inns in Boothbay Harbor that accommodate families and large parties, normally bed and breakfasts house exclusively couples. Be sure to check that the lodging facility is family friendly before booking your stay at a bed and breakfast or inn in Boothbay Harbor.

On the same note, for those with the intention of bringing the entire family, including the family dog, you’ll need to be sure the bed and breakfast is pet friendly as many inns do not accommodate them. Worry not—there are a few cottage rentals and inns to choose from that are pet friendly in Boothbay Harbor.
With so many things to enjoy in Boothbay Harbor, there is little need to travel outside of the area. Between scenic lighthouse boat tours, walks in the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, kayaking, shopping and dining, and of course finding relaxation and romance in your bed and breakfast quarters, you will certainly stay busy. Your innkeeper can give you tips on the best place to dine and attractions in Boothbay Harbor to make sure you experience all there is in this quaint seaside town.

Ship Ahoy Motel (Southport, ME) closed permanently in Spring of 2021 following the passing of owner, Jim Norman. He built the beautifully sited motel in 1955 or 1956, I think. My wife and I were there in 1958 for our honeymoon and returned there many summers until she died of cancer in 2015. We thought Ship Ahoy was the greatest bargain on the Maine Mid-Coast! We especially liked Jim.
