With its unique position on the far east coast of the United States, Maine is home to more than 4,500 islands, all curious and unique in their own way. While many are remote and uninhabited, Vinalhaven, Maine is one island worth visiting.
Located about 12 miles off the coast of MidCoast Maine, Vinalhaven is Maine’s largest offshore island and offers locals and visitors alike a chance to explore the state’s charm away from the mainland.
With opportunities for activities like hiking, swimming, exploring unique shops, and indulging in local flavors, Vinalhaven has something for everyone.

Meet Vinalhaven Maine
Spanning 23 square miles in the heart of Penobscot Bay, Vinalhaven is part of the Fox Islands, along with neighboring North Haven.
In the 19th century, the island gained prominence for its high-quality granite, which was widely used across the United States. Over time, Vinalhaven also became a hub for the fishing industry and is now home to one of the world’s largest lobster fleets.
While most modern conveniences are concentrated near Carvers Harbor on the southern shore, the island boasts vast areas of unspoiled natural beauty, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Getting to Vinalhaven
Since Vinalhaven is an offshore island, access is limited to ferries and flights, both of which provide a chance to soak in the beauty of the Pine Tree State…
Ferries
The Maine State Ferry Service operates daily trips between Rockland and Vinalhaven, with the journey taking about 75 minutes. Both walk-on passengers and vehicles are welcome.
Flights
Penobscot Island Air offers charter flights to Vinalhaven from Knox County Regional Airport in Owl’s Head.

- Saddleback Ledge Light is one of Maine’s oldest lighthouses and is on Saddleback Ledge between Vinalhaven and Isle au Haut.
- Heron Neck Light is on Green’s Island and dates to 1854.
- Browns Head Light dates to 1857 and is situated at the western entrance to the Fox Island Thoroughfare, which separates North Haven and Vinalhaven.
Of the three, only the Browns Head Light grounds are open to the public. The other two are best viewed from the water.
